Welcome to the always free, reader-supported mid-week edition of The Experiment where we share great things to read, cook, listen to, and watch. If you’d like to support my work, buy my Alamo book, buy some Experiment merch, drop some coins in the PayPal fountain, or become a paid subscriber. But even if you don’t, this bugga free.
Good morning! Hi! Did you have a fun New Year’s Eve? I did! OK, enough chit chat. We’ve got a lot of interesting stuff, including the longest list I’ve ever shared of dumb movies that I’ve liked.
Let’s get to it:
Was 2023 fun? (Monica Hesse)
This is cool. Nina Jankowicz, whom I wrote about in March, filed her lawsuit against Fox News. May she succeed beyond Fox’s wildest nightmares. (wiczipedia)
A couple of my cousins, George and Sam, started a band:
From my friend Amy Spitalnick, who is a real-life neo-Nazi hunter: “Please read every word of this Times investigation, which found a pattern of rape, mutilation and extreme brutality against women in Hamas’ attacks on Israel.” (The New York Times)
OK, if you read that one, then this one about “the sweetest bromance in sports” between Lee Corso and Kirk Herbstreit is a perfect salve. (GQ)
Do you have a show that only you watch? S is in the middle of some Netflix horror show. I am two episodes into The Night Agent and have found my perfect, non-challenging indulgence.
Jon Hamm and Tina Fey have special comic chemistry.
Joy Ride is sorta like Bridesmaids, but where the latter cast humor broadly to get a wider audience, Joy Ride based its admittedly crass jokes on specific problems and motivations of the characters. I didn’t really like Bridesmaids. I laughed my ass off at Joy Ride.
Do you know how rare it is for me to laugh out loud more than a couple times in a movie? Bottoms cleared that bar by a lot.
The Family Plan wasn’t “good,” but it sure was fun.
We set up a merch table in the back where you can get T-shirts, coffee mugs, and even tote bags now. Show the world that you’re part of The Experiment.
We’ve also got a tip jar, and I promise to waste every cent you give me on having fun, because writing this newsletter for you is how I have fun.
