Your Mid-Week Experiment
4 movies, 3 comedy specials, 2 TV shows (I was sick, OK?), 2 songs, 2 essays, 1 book review, 1 speaking engagement, and 1 blogpost.
Let’s get to it:
Love this from Simone Weil: “Attention, taken to its highest degree, is the same thing as prayer. It presupposes faith and love.” (The Marginalian)
This is cool: I’ll be part of the Renewing Democracy Speaker Series at the LBJ School on March 19 when I’ll talking about getting your message out. (Texas LBJ School)
This is a pretty smart analysis of the Democratic Party’s identity crisis. (Ezra Klein)
My buddy’s review of Get the Picture was so smart and witty that it made me want to read the book. (Martin Gelin)
Staggering to quantify Trump’s off-again, off-again relationship to the truth (Politifact)
This movie was like fishing. It plays with you, letting the hook set, and only at the very end when you’re in the boat, defenseless, does it hit you over the head.
Ryan Murphy’s latest season of Fued spotlights Truman Capote’s overcoming his failure to deliver a followup to In Cold Blood by completely betraying his high-society friends. I have feelings about all of this.
Digging the Godmother.
Been on a great Mike Birbiglia kick. This special was a terrific examination on the nature of jokes. Also this: “Jokes have been ruined by people who aren’t good at telling jokes. A joke should never end with ‘I’m joking’ or ‘git ‘er done.’”
First Nick Kroll special I ever watched. It was not bad.
Weird to see a comedy special where Donald Trump referenced only as a wealthy reality TV star.
Oof. Right in the dad feels.
This is perfect for watching while sick.
This movie was amiable crap. Great for watching while sick, though if I had been healthy, it would have made me sick.
